Kangaroo Tour: 1929-1930

Sean Fagan of RL1908.com

For the first time the Kangaroos were led by a Queenslander - Tom Gorman.

Kangaroos - 1929/30This Ashes series is best remembered for the infamous "no-try" call against Australia's Joe ‘Chimpy' Busch in the deciding 3rd Test.

The try would have delivered Australia the Ashes - ultimately it caused such an uproar that a 4th Test was played!

In the First Test the Kangaroos demolished England 31-8 with half-back Busch the stand-out player ahead of Gorman and George Treweeke.

The English forwards were far superior to the Kangaroos in scrums and ruck play, but in the end were run off their feet by the Australian backs.

A controversial 2nd Test played on a wet and heavy field saw England given much more latitude in defence by the referee. Australia's open play was shut down by close marking and dour English tactics and play. It worked though for the home team as they achieved the desired result winning 9-3 and keept the Ashes series alive.

The Third Test produced a 0-all draw after Busch's last minute lunge at the try line was over-ruled by the dubious - and very late - call of the touch judge. The referee had called the try as fair but, with much reluctance, had to abide by the call of the sideline official.

The decision to play a 4th Test to break the dead-locked series seemed to have been more of a business decision than looking for a just separation of honour between the teams. The public though were in no doubt the Ashes were still up for grabs, even if the English Rugby League didn't portray it as so.

With six minutes remaining in the 4th Test scores again were locked at 0-all. With Australia reduced to 12 men a rare opening appeared and England took the only try of the match to
win 3-0.

Australia's best on tour were Gorman, Busch, Eric Weissel, Wally Prigg and George Treweeke.
